Polishing Newly Chrome-Plated Surfaces Without Scratching the Finish

Fresh chrome plating has a unique look: sharp reflections, high distinction of image, and very low haze. In simple terms, it looks bright, clear, and mirror-like.

The problem is that many metal polishes are not designed for finishes this refined.

Most consumer metal polishes are general-purpose products. They are made to remove oxidation and restore shine in one step, so they usually contain an abrasive grain coarse enough to cut through tarnish and corrosion. That is useful on older chrome, but often far too aggressive for newly plated surfaces.

On fresh chrome, a general-purpose polish can reduce clarity and leave a hazy, flatter-looking finish. The surface may still shine, but the crisp mirror effect is often diminished.

That is why I formulated Micron One Metal Polish.

The necessity came from a practical job: cleaning up newly installed chrome tapware during a house renovation. Our Micron Five polish, while excellent as a general-purpose metal polish, was too coarse for that type of finish. Newly plated chrome needed something finer.

Micron One contains an ultra-fine abrasive system with no coarse particles above 2 microns, and the vast majority below 0.5 microns. This allows it to polish delicate chrome surfaces while maintaining high clarity and very low haze.

It is ideal for:

  • newly plated chrome on vintage cars
  • motorbike chrome
  • new chrome tapware
  • any bright finish where optical clarity matters

The polishing cloth also matters. A clean microfiber cloth is usually the safest option. Cotton rags and kitchen wipes can be surprisingly abrasive on delicate chrome, regardless of the polish used. Blue synthetic kitchen towels may be suitable, but test first on a small area.

A machine polisher can also be used with care. A soft foam pad, ideally around 3 inches, works well. Keep the speed low and use only a small amount of polish, as fine products can flick easily into surrounding areas.

Fresh chrome does not usually need aggressive polishing. It needs a product fine enough to maintain the finish rather than cut it back. That is exactly what Micron One was designed to do.
